With a unique approach to writing and production, traditional instrumentation, strings and acoustic instruments are combined with layers of contemporary sounds, creating unique cutting edge soundscores, full of depth, texture and emotion.
Craig Stockbridge has music in his DNA. Born into a British family of performers – including Canterbury Theatre actors, a famous countertenor, even a professional magician – Stockbridge has lived with music as both his main passion and profession for more than twenty years.
The producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist began his musical adventures at 13, playing guitar in a variety of bands. Rooted in reggae, funk and punk rock, Stockbridge also picked up bass, percussion and electronics, and moved into production in the late ‘80s. He has since created dozens of sound scores, crafted commissioned work for numerous dance, theatre and DVD projects, and co-written, exec-produced and performed on a Juno-nominated album.
Stockbridge also comes charged with valuable industry insight and experience, having worked in music retail for two rich decades. As HMV’s longtime Metro Region Manager, he helped the company establish itself in Canada by developing and implementing innovative, street-savvy programs designed to promote new music, including the initiation of an extensive electronic music section.
In 2004, Stockbridge exited this position to focus full-time on making music. Stockbridge Music Productions – an umbrella company for his multi-pronged ambitions and ventures – was born. Developing a unique writing and production style that combines traditional instrumentation with layers of lush, contemporary sounds, Stockbridge has amassed an expansive library of emotive and engaging originals, many of which have been licensed as scores for television, film and new media projects.
With producer Matteo ‘M1’ DiMaria, Stockbridge formed both Stockmar Music and Reinvent Music. The former provideds a base through which the duo creates and licenses original audioscapes, with clients including Universal Music, YTV, The Food Channel, 15 Love, and The Surreal Gourmet.
The Reinvent Music label provides a home base for CD, vinyl and digital recordings by Stockbridge, DiMaria and friends, with releases by artists including M1, DJ Dayhota, and The Highlife having achieved positions on global dance charts. Stockbridge’s edgy electronic alter ego, Playmachine, has had three rousing singles on Reinvent to date: “Baby Wahwah” (2005), “Don’t Stop the Funk” and “Sexy Vibrator” (both 2006). New material is soon set for release.
Recent credits and career highlights include:
• Scored music for high profile arts companies including: National Ballet of Canada (2007); Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre (2007/08); The Chimera Project dance company (2007/08).
• Scored and programmed music for the Canadian Film Centre’s Shanghai Gallery video game prototype (2007).
• Co-writer, performer, executive producer of M1’s Robopop album (Universal Music), nominated for a 2006 Juno Award in Dance Recording of the Year category.
• Commissioned by Universal Music to compose music for the Faux Aquarium DVD (2006).
